Clinical Nurse Specialist
Do you have what it takes to be a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Walden Behavioral Care? Read on and find everything you need to know about being a Registered Nurse/Clinical Leader, or click through to the Walden Behavioral Care web site to learn more about our incredible team of healthcare professionals and why we believe we can help achieve lasting recovery for patients with eating disorders and psychiatric disorders.
What is a Clinical Nurse Specialist?
Generally, throughout the U.S., the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse who serves as a healthcare provider, educator, consultant, researcher, leader, administrator or case manager, and may serve any combination of these roles.
Unlike a Clinical Nurse Leader, who is a generalist, the Clinical Nurse Specialist specializes in one area of care.
The Clinical Nurse Specialist often sets standards for quality patient care, and trouble shoots problems and crises. The Clinical Nurse Specialist typically takes a preventive role, anticipating problems and preventing them from developing. Most Clinical Nurse Specialists have a specialty practice area, such as psychiatric care or eating disorders at Walden, or diabetes, cardiology or pediatrics at other hospitals.
Clinical Nurse Specialist Job Requirements at Walden Behavioral Care
Generally, throughout the U.S., a Clinical Nurse Specialist must possess a master's degree or doctoral degree plus several years of practice in a clinical nursing specialty.
To perform as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, a nurse must demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in the job description, and be licensed and registered by the Board of Nurse Examiners.
A Clinical Nurse Specialist must be able to care for individuals, families, groups and systems with complex health needs within a chosen clinical area; assist health care providers and consumers in promoting or achieving optimal health; develop and implement standards of nursing; consult with other health providers; use and promote research; seek consultations and make referrals as needed.
